Charlie McMahon - Transforming the Didjeridu: Music

Description:

Music: Charlie's 1980's Gondwanaland band prefigured world music by a decade. Making the first original contemporary music based on didjeridu rhythms involved accurately tuning didjeridus, crafting a chromatic set of 12 instruments and opting for a modal style of composition with environmental themes for inspiration.

Fusion: For an electronic edge CHarlie invented the face bass which picks up didj and voice percussion from inside the mouth. With sound samplers the process of layering multiple tracks to spontaneously create a full fusion sound is demonstrated.

Charlie through his presentation encourages experimentation in sound design - demonstrates original ideas for original composition - shows the inter-relationship between music and other curriculum areas - and brings the understanding of indigenous music and especially the didjeridu to students in a very accessible way. Students will be enthralled by the discussion and demonstration by this wonderful musician.
